The LSA bewoners (Landelijk Samenwerkingsverband Actieve Bewoners) is the national association for community led organisations in the Netherlands. LSA and its members believe in communities as the answer to many of society’s questions. In 2020 LSA Bewoners took over responsibility for community foundations from Lokale Fondsen and now intends to build a national movement of community foundations and to offer effective ways of capacity building for local members.
Mensen Maken Amsterdam (“People Make Amsterdam”) is a community foundation that not only manages neighbourhood funds across Amsterdam but also acts as a support and contact point for other community foundations in the Netherlands, working closely with LSA bewoners.
Through its neighbourhood funds, it enables residents to take initiative and strengthen social cohesion, culture, sustainability, and community wellbeing in the city. By mobilising local resources and encouraging civic participation, Mensen Maken Amsterdam has become an important driver of grassroots initiatives and citizen-led solutions.
At the same time, the organisation serves as a knowledge and support hub at national level: it shares expertise on the community foundation model, provides advice on governance, fundraising and programme development, and connects emerging and established community foundations. This dual role allows Mensen Maken Amsterdam to be both a practitioner deeply rooted in its local community and a connector and resource for the wider Dutch community foundation field.
