Comunalia – Alliance of Community Foundations of Mexico

Comunalia – Alianza de Fundaciones Comunitarias de México, A.C.
2011

Comunalia is a national alliance comprising 17 community foundations anchored in 16 Mexican states, working across 736 municipalities. Founded in 2011, this nonprofit network promotes sustainable and locally led development by empowering its member foundations—local civil society institutions that act as community-led philanthropic platforms. Comunalia connects these foundations with financial and human resources, fosters capacity building through peer learning and specialized training, and champions strategic local philanthropy to address shared challenges.

The alliance works under shared values like subsidiarity, transparency, and inclusivity, and engages in research, policy advocacy, and SDG-aligned initiatives. In recent years, Comunalia has channelled over 1.2 billion pesos into local projects, collaborated with international funders like Mott and the Coca‑Cola Foundation, advanced public policy engagement, and hosted annual summits and webinars on issues from refugee support to strategic giving circles. Through these efforts, Comunalia strengthens the leadership and impact of community foundations, reinforcing their role as vital infrastructure for democratic, place-based development in Mexico.
