Acting on Climate: How Community Foundations Can Drive Local Climate Action

This publication brings together examples of how community foundations across Europe are responding to climate change through community leadership, grantmaking, advocacy and responsible stewardship of their own resources. Drawing on case studies from Germany, Italy and Scotland, it highlights practical approaches to integrating climate action into organisational strategy, funding, investments and operations. The report also introduces tools and international commitments to help community foundations strengthen their contribution to a more sustainable and resilient future.

Vital Signs – one step at a time

The Vital Signs approach helps community foundations use data to identify local needs and guide action for stronger, more connected communities. By combining research and civic dialogue, it supports foundations in taking on leadership roles and fostering collaboration with citizens, authorities, and donors. In Germany, the concept is being introduced through pilot meetings and studies, aiming to inspire data-driven philanthropy and link local efforts to the Sustainable Development Goals.
